Outdoor Newborn Session

It’s been more than 2 months since Covid-19 turned our worlds upside down. So many things have changed in such a short amount of time and all of us are trying to adjust to a new normal. It’s affected so many different areas of our personal and professional lives in ways I never even considered when this all began.

When hospitals started to get overrun with patients they basically shut down to everyone except essential workers. So expectant moms were having to give birth either alone or with only their husband/partners, but family and friends were not allowed to visit. Plus, no more hospital newborn photographers. And that meant no newborn sessions at home either. It breaks my heart so think that moms who’ve been looking forward to their newborn session would have to cancel or postpone. Those first few weeks of a baby’s life go so fast. And they change so much, it’s important to capture those moments.

Even though things are settling down and places are beginning to open up again, it’s still not the right time for photographers to be doing in home newborn sessions. So, as an alternative, in the warmer summer months, I think an outdoor newborn session is the perfect option for families. I wanted to share a few images and talk about what to expect during an outdoor newborn session.

My biggest concern is making sure that everyone is safe so I’ll be wearing a mask for all sessions. The lenses I use allow me to be at a safe distance so I don’t need to be near the baby. This can be a little tricky when it comes to posing because I’m normally pretty hands on, but I’m confident we’ll be able to make it work and capture some amazing images.

I don’t typically use props, but there have been times when I bring a blanket or swaddle with me for shoots. I won’t be doing that anymore so we’d just use whatever you have on hand.

With an outdoor newborn session, I’d want to make sure we have plenty of shade so that the light is even and flattering for everyone. We’d schedule your session around that. I also want to mention clothing really quick. A lot of newborn clothing can be big. Try to find something that fits well.

One thing I think you should consider is how buggy your yard can be. I don’t think it’s a good idea to be outside with your newborn for a long time if you’ve got tons of mosquitoes. If that’s the case, let’s think about some other options. Do you have a front porch? We can also try some through-the-window shots. Here are two examples of those.

Having a baby is a big deal and should be celebrated so I hope the idea of an outdoor newborn session is one that you’ll consider. If you’re too nervous, and that’s totally understandable, try waiting a few weeks and revisit the idea. Or, I’m happy to help you take the photos yourself! We can talk about the best spots in your home for light and I can recommend some poses to try. You’re going to be the family photographer for years to come so why not learn now!
