Are you focusing more on the pose than the personality?
When you take pictures of your children, do you find yourself saying things like, “look here,” or “smile?” The problem with that is you’re asking them to turn their attention away from what they’re doing. Now that candid moment has turned into a posed cheesefest.
One way to infuse some authenticity into your images is to sit back and observe. Catch your kids while they are engaged in their favorite activity. Don’t ask them to look up. Concentrate on what you want to remember about the moment. The way your 5 year-old bites his lip when he’s coloring? How your little girl crosses her feet when she’s reading a book? The way your daughters play with each other and giggle uncontrollably?
To give your images a little edge, move around for different angles and perspectives until you find a shot that speaks to you. Yes, the posed, smiley shots are necessary. But, don’t forget about the little every day moments that often go unnoticed.
