Mother’s Day Mini Session Pose Ideas

Mommy and me sessions are some of my absolute favorite sessions to shoot! Getting moms in front of the camera is so so important. We are usually the ones behind the camera taking pictures of our loved ones and it’s a special treat to actually get IN the frame for a change. I hosted Mother’s Day mini sessions this past weekend and thought it might be fun to share with you some of my favorite poses and why I think they work so well.

One thing you’ll notice about all of these shots is that no one is looking at the camera. That’s the way these sessions should be! I love to see moms interacting with their children. And I think it’s good for moms to see how palpable the bond is between them. They don’t get to see it because they are LIVING it!

Pose Idea #1 – Stay Seated

The first pose I usually start with is mom sitting down on a blanket with her kiddos snuggled around her. I will ask the youngest to sit on mommy’s lap and that works for two reasons. First – it hides the tummy area. Second – it gets everyone nice and close so that they’re all in focus. For this shot, I asked the girls to tell mom their favorite thing about her. The little one said, “she’s cute!”

Pose Idea #2 – Face to Face

I love the interaction between mom and daughter here and I especially love the angle. When clients aren’t so focused on the camera in front of them, it allows for a more genuine connection.

Pose Idea #3 – On the Ground

Moms are usually all too happy to get down on the ground with their little ones. That’s where they spend a lot of time anyway, right?! It works because you can get everyone nice and close. Added bonus: most body flaws are hidden. Just make sure you don’t see too much cleavage!

Pose Idea #4 – Lay Me Down

I know, I know, another laying down shot, but again it’s a great way to get mom on the same level as her little one. Plus, the baby is in front hiding any body flaws. Do you get where I’m going here? Most of these poses are about making mom look and feel her best. Especially new moms!! No more excuses now. If you’re worried about your baby belly, stop!

Pose Idea #5 – Patty Cake

I call this Patty Cake because this is usually how you play the game. Your child seated across from you. Again, a face to face shot, but both of them are upright. And look how sweetly he is staring at her!
