Motherhood, Captured – Blog Series

Motherhood – it’s a crazy, beautiful, utterly exhausting experience. We do everything for our children. They are the center of our universe. But more often than not we are missing in their lives. In photos. I’m guilty of this. I hate being in front of the camera. My kids are much cuter than me anyway.

Every year around this time though I feel a renewed sense of purpose though. Maybe it’s because Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Or maybe it’s this video that has sparked a fire in me. My goal is to devote the next couple of months to moms. Here on the blog and social media. I came up with the idea to do a blog series called Motherhood, Captured to showcase all of the amazing moms who are killing it online. Being their true, honest, authentic selves and making sure they are in the frame and present in their family photos! I’ve been silently stalking women on Instagram and there is so much beautiful work out there! Women who are using photography as a tool to document motherhood. I sent out a bunch of emails and some pretty awesome women responded. I’m so excited to bring you the first in this series.

This is Tara Moon and her feed is filled with amazing pictures of her little boy Sonny, but she also makes sure that she gets in the frame too. Keep reading to find out why photos are important to her as a mom and her message for all of you about getting in the picture.

Why are photos important to you as a mom?
“Since I can remember I’v always loved photos. Back in the day I was that friend that gathered everyone together for group photos. As a mom it’s so important because those memories are treasures and photos capture them for a life time.”

What makes a great photo?

“A great photo to me captures not only a moment but a feeling. I love catching those sweet laughs, surprise smooches and that beautiful light at sunset. Finding beauty in ordinary moments is my favorite kinda photo.”

Do you think photography has changed the way you look at or feel about motherhood?
“I think photography has given me a tool to capture that magic that gets lost sometimes in everyday life. It helps me find light in the inevitable mess that comes along with the job.”

What would you tell a mommy friend that was interested in taking better photos of their kids?

“I think it’s important to keep the background simple so it doesn’t clutter the image. Get on your child’s level. Taking pictures kneeled down is better to me personally than trying to take a picture of them while standing above them.”

How can moms get in the frame more?

“I’ve always loved taking pictures and being in them (especially photo booths) but when I became a mother I started getting self conscious about the way I looked. This is natural right? I noticed that it’s easier to be in the pic if it’s just natural and not posed. Laughing with my babe, or watching him are my favorite pics with me in them. I do encourage all of you who are reading this to try and get in front of the camera because one day you’ll want to look back and see that you were there lol.”

Where do you find your inspiration?

“I have a background in event design and decor and I’m always making a new backdrop to keep that creative part of my soul alive. It’s easy to lose yourself in motherhood. I’m always on Pinterest searching for inspiration, or just finding it in window displays around town. I also have a passion for street art so we go on Mural treasure hunts often. I gain support, encouragement, and inspiration from friends that all see the world through different lenses that illuminate my feed and my soul. @amandawituki is my partner in confetti crime and she is all the colors. She’s a reminder that I want my world to always be colorful because that’s a big part of myself I never want to fade. @dearauggie is a constant inspiration and Best friend that has a beautiful love for all things natural. She has a way of catching moments so organically and blows my mind with her warm photography skills. @maddihanson is a lifestyle photographer that not only captures a beautiful moment but so much richness and soul. I wanted to mention these three friends because they are beautiful women that inspire all of my pictures I take.”

Tara uses a Canon 70D for her pictures, but also says, “Phone pics with the right editing can look just as great as a capture on an actual camera.” If you’re looking for a good editing app, she recommends A Color Story or Afterlight.

Now go show Tara some love and let her know that you checked out this blog post. Leave a comment on one of her pictures and give her a follow if you like what you see (which I know you will!)

Next Wednesday I’ll be back with another amazing mom. If you’d like to nominate a mommy blogger for this series, please send me an email at stacy@stacymaephotography.com. I’d also love for you to share this on social media.
