My last post was about a few of my favorite craft websites and looking through them all put me in a crafty mood! So I’m going to share with you how to make a fabric crown. In January, I attended the Savvy Workshop with Kara May hosted by Marsha Mifsud in Georgia. We photographed a bunch of models and got to watch Kara and Marsha work their magic styling the subjects. I loved all of Marsha’s props and we used these fabric crowns for a shoot with two little girls.
Instead of going out and buying one, (which is what I’d usually do) I figured I would try and make one. So I set out to JoAnn’s to pick up some lacy fabric. There were tons to choose from but I settled on two separate styles to try. This is one of them.
I bought one yard of each fabric to make 2 crowns in all. I assumed I would mess up on one! So the actual length was about 18 inches and that size works well for most little kids. I chose 2 different kinds of fabric to give it some texture and attached them with hot glue. I also hot glued the ends to make the crown shape. Once that’s done, you need something to harden the crown. I asked an employee at JoAnn’s what I could use and she recommended this. It looks like regular glue, but it dries clear so don’t worry.
Before you do this step, find something that you can drape the crown over while it dries. Make sure it’s the right size for the crown you made. I used this little birdcage. You have to cover it with plastic wrap so that the fabric stiffener doesn’t get on your form. *that’s the other style crown I made on the birdcage*
I poured some of the fabric stiffener in a paper plate and then dipped the crown in and worked it all throughout. Use gloves for this part! Make sure to squeeze off any excess. When it’s ready, place it on your form and let it dry. That’s it! I left it overnight and it was nice and hard in the morning. My only complaint is that it feels crunchy hard almost. I wonder if there’s a product that would allow it to be more flexible. Still, I’m happy with the results and it cost way less than me buying it online.
And of course I had to ask one of my girls to model it really quick.
