On Location Lifestyle Newborn Session

It’s been a while since I’ve photographed a newborn on location. For the last couple years, I’ve had clients travel to my in home studio and I was so used to doing the same type of posed shots over and over. Recently, I switched to on location newborn sessions and it’s forced me to step outside of my comfort zone a little. With an on location lifestyle newborn session, I am coming in to your home to capture you and your brand new baby. There’s no beanbag. No super posed shots. Instead, I look for interaction in lifestyle sessions. Mom and baby snuggling on the bed. Both parents looking happily at their tiny bundle of joy. Shots that show the love and connection between a new parent and their new baby. I love the casual, comfortable vibe during a home session. We can still get those adorable, sleepy baby shots. It’ll just be on a bed or a couch or a crib.

In home sessions rely a lot on proper lighting. I don’t use flash so I’ll often ask clients to open all the curtains to let in as much light as possible. Before the session, I might even ask you to text me a few quick pics from inside your home so I can get an idea of your style and where the light might be best. I love images that are soft and airy. I also love using neutral colors like whites and creams and grays in my newborn sessions. That way the focus is all about the baby!

I know what you’re thinking, “My home doesn’t look like a Pottery Barn catalog!” It doesn’t have to! I promise. I care more about how much light you’ve got rather than the pile of laundry in the corner of your bedroom. I might ask to move a few things to get closer to the light, but I promise I’ll help move it back. I tend to take a lot of tight shots and that’s perfect because close ups will hide a lot of clutter! Lol!

Here’s a recent session I shot at a clients home. The nursery was very well lit (and so adorably decorated), we had to do a few shots in there. I love doing details shots here too because moms usually work so hard putting it all together it’s nice to remember how it looked.

We also did a bunch of shots in the living room where there were sliding glass doors to a patio on their left side and then windows behind them for extra brightness. I just love when clients want to include their fur babies in the session. These two were so cute, but one is clearly more interested in the baby than the other!

We went back in to the nursery for a few shots of the baby in his crib. There was also a rocker in there that was a nice solid color. I’m sure Mom has spent many nights in that rocker nursing and singing lullabies.

These shots were back in the living room. Mom had bought this adorable puppy set from Etsy. One quick tip, if you are purchasing a hat or diaper cover from Etsy, search for “newborn photography prop.” There are a ton of sellers that cater specifically to newborn photographers so the sizing is usually spot on. Usually when you buy clothing for newborns it is HUGE!2014-12-08_00092014-12-08_0010
