If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you know I big puffy heart Instagram. It’s an awesome platform to share photos and meet new people who love the same things you do. I am inspired every day when I scroll through my feed.
I recently took an online class with Hilary Rushford of Dean Street Society on how to grow your Instagram following. I learned so much and I thought I’d share some things with you. Here are 5 tips for how to rock your Instagram shots.
1. Use an editing app. There are a few different ones I like. Sometimes I stick with Instagram’s in app filters. My faves are Sierra and Rise. I also make basic tweaks to exposure and contrast either before or after adding the filter.
I also like VSCO, PicTapGo and occasionally Mextures. What are some of your faves?
2. Find good light. The same rules of photography apply to your camera phone images. Use natural light as often as possible. If not, heads towards a window. You can tap your phone’s screen to adjust the exposure. Just find the darkest part of your image, give it a little tap and you’ll bump up the brightness. You can also darken your image by tapping on the brightest part.
3. Consider composition. Don’t just snap away. Think about how you want to frame it first. Do you want to take the photo straight on, from above, at an angle, off center? Get creative with your perspective and experiment with different angles.
4. Think about your background. Find fun backgrounds to make your subject stand out. Instead of taking this shot of my yummy cinnamon roll on an ugly paper plate, I added a pretty vintage floral dish to make it pop. There’s nothing wrong with styling your images to make them more interesting!
5. Get in close. Sometimes the best shots require you to zoom in. Not with your camera, but with your feet. Or, your arms. Lol! I loved watching my youngest with our dog during her first few weeks at home. She laid down next to her and I knew I needed this shot of them nose to nose. I had to get pretty close to get the crop I wanted and just focus on their noses touching. This one makes my heart happy.
