How to Decorate With Pictures

This week on the blog we’re going to focus on ways that you can get your images OFF your computer and on to your walls. All week long, I’ll be sharing creative ways to display your images. I’d love to see how you display YOUR pictures so use the hashtag #projectprint and share on social media. Today I’m giving you a sneak peek inside my home and how I decorate with pictures.

When we moved in to this house, after renting for several years, one of the first things I wanted to do was hang pictures. I knew right away I wanted to create a gallery wall going up the stairs to the girl’s bedrooms. I also knew that I wanted to use an assortment of frames so I started collecting from places like Home Goods and Michaels. I think a lot of what holds people back from hanging pictures is choosing which images to display and how to make them look good. I created a Pinterest board with tons of ideas, but I honestly think that contributed to my feeling over overwhelm. Finally, one day last year, about an hour or so before family was coming over for a birthday party, I decided it was time. Nothing like a little pressure to get you going! I picked up a hammer and some nails and got to work. I don’t necessarily recommend going about it this way, but sometimes the best thing to do it just start! I did learn a few things along the way so here are a few tips.

Stick with a color palette. I wanted to keep things light and airy so I chose mostly white frames and added in my favorite blue and some natural, wood elements. I’m actually thinking of switching out that bottom image of my daughter in her bright pink coat because I don’t think it blends well with the softer colors. That’s the great thing about a gallery wall though. It’s designed to grow and change with you. I’ll be adding to this as I find items that are complimentary.

The images and accessories you choose for your gallery wall should be a reflection of you. Include quirky, fun elements that add texture and interest. I love the brass heart and the marquee star. Both items I found at Michaels. It’s also a good idea to include natural elements whenever you can. This is another spot that I’ve been working on over the couch in my living room. I found the shelf at Target and added 2 5×7 frames as well as an 8×10. The little wooden sign was purchased at Francesca’s and I added a lavender plant to bring it to life. Underneath the shelf I added two 10×10 frames and a wooden letter I found at Michaels. I’ve since added another frame to that grouping and continue to look for accessories to add.

Don’t be afraid to experiment. I purchased this window frame at Michaels (are you noticing a theme here?!) and added in a few of my favorite images, but something is still not quite right. The pictures don’t really flow. The one of my daughter in the pool with the bright pink flamingo sticks out like a sore thumb. And the sizes are different as well. The top two are 4×6 and the rest are 5×7. BUT, this is the fun part about decorating with pictures. I love playing around and switching things up until I find a style that works.

Display your cell phone pics too. Just because they came from your phone doesn’t mean they aren’t worthy of going up on the wall. Those everyday moments are just as important as your big camera shots. I purchased this shutter from Kohl’s a while back and for the longest time it sat empty leaning up against a wall. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do it it, until I got back a few iPhone prints from Origrami. They are the perfect size to slip in the shutter! Plus, on the bottom half, you’ll notice I stuck in some holiday cards. I love walking past this during the day and see all those smiling faces!
