This weekend, I hosted a handful of moms (and 1 dad) in my home studio for a Photography for Beginners Class. The class is designed to introduce moms (or dads) to the basics of photography and to encourage their creativity. In the class, we talk about camera modes, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, finding good light, shooting indoors and more. If you missed out on attending, here’s a quick explanation of aperture.
During class, I showed everyone the difference between a small F-stop and a large F-stop. This first image is a shot of my daughter’s toys at F16. You can see that all of the toys are in focus. That is because at a higher F-stop, you have a greater depth of field, meaning more is in focus.
The second image was shot at F2. I focused on the pinkish toy (second one in the row) and you can see how the others fall out of focus. Big difference, right? Unfortunately, most DSLR’s come with a kit lens that doesn’t allow you to go that low. The range is usually 3.5-5.6. I recommend that anyone interested in experimenting with photography purchase a 50 mm 1.8 lens. It’s inexpensive and will allow you to practice with a small F-stop.
I love that so many of my students during class are also clients. I think it’s so wonderful that they want to carry on the tradition of beautiful images. Being able to teach people one-on-one is also great because they can ask questions and we can use visual examples. I know that not everyone could attend the class, so if you’d like to read more, check out the link at the bottom of the page. You will have the opportunity to purchase the class notes and learn on your own from the comfort on your home. Anyone who purchases the class notes during the week of Feb. 24-28 will also receive a custom app for their smartphone. The app will allow you to have your notes on the go!!
