When I talk about in home family sessions, I can see the fear in people’s eyes. Lol! I know what you’re thinking. “My house is a mess!” Or, “It’s too dark!” Maybe you feel like your family is boring or you don’t do anything special together (yup, that’s us!). You want to wait until the house has a fresh coat of paint or the bathroom is finally finished being renovated. You’re afraid of what photos in your home will look like. Will they be pretty?
I get it! Honestly, when I think about a photographer coming in to my home and tripping over piles of laundry or cluttered countertops, I cringe. Having to clean up and make the house presentable for someone to come in and take pictures while I pray that my kids behave seems super stressful. Who would want to put themselves through that. BUT, and this is important, it’s TOTALLY WORTH IT!
Why, you ask? Think about it – so many of your family’s most treasured memories happen in your home. Lazy Sunday mornings gathered around the kitchen table eating pancakes. Birthday parties surrounded by friends and family. Playing in the backyard. Bedtime stories. Bubble baths. Baking cookies. All of the little moments that we take for granted throughout the day. Those are the things that SHOULD be photographed. Not your family dressed and perfectly posed in a field of flowers. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE those sessions too, but I also really truly believe that in order to get authentic, candid, genuine emotion in your images you need to be doing something that elicits those feelings. Posing won’t get you there.
