3 Simple Ways to Capture Your Child and Their Halloween Costume

It’s that time of the year, fall is here! Pumpkin spice is everywhere, leaves are falling from the trees, and the air is getting crisper. Plus Halloween is right around the corner! Halloween is one of our favorite holidays because the whole family gets involved. From dressing up to the games we can play, baking, activities, there’s just so much fun to be had in October.

Halloween is the main event of October and the costumes the family gets to wear are the star of the show. Of course, you guys know I have some great tips for you to capture the best pictures of your children in their Halloween Costumes. So you can look back at them years from now and cherish those fun memories together. You don’t have to have a fancy camera or be a professional photographer either, just using your smartphone will do.

Here are 3 simple ways to capture your child in their Halloween Costume…

1. Find the Perfect Lighting Spot & Take The Shot Before Halloween

Don’t wait until the day of Halloween to try and capture shots of your little ones all dressed up in their costume, you’ll be too busy to think about doing it creatively. Your little one’s will be too excited to participate in the activities that they probably won’t want to stay still for longer than 10 seconds. Instead, pick a day where you can shoot late in the afternoon about 2 hours before the sun sets so you can take advantage of the sun’s golden glow.

Pick a spot that is simple and make sure that the background is not too busy. For these shots of my daughter, I chose our front porch because I knew her bright green costume would really pop. Position your child with the sun at their back and snap away. If you’re having trouble with this type of lighting situation, switch to open shade for some nice, even light.

The lightning is so important when making sure you get a good quality picture, so remember this when setting up for the perfect Halloween Costume shot.

2. Capture Their Personality

Let your littles personality really SHINE through the picture. Make this such a fun experience for everyone involved, especially your kids. Have your little ghost or ghoul get into character, have them make scary noises and try to scare the camera. If their costume includes a mask, have them put it on, ask them to mimic their character’s voice and actions. Do you have a mini superhero? Ask them to flex their muscles and cheer them on. If your little girl is a ballerina, make her twirl and dance. Have an Elsa or Anna? Ask them to sing “Let it go!” and pretend Olaf is there with them. Doing so will make having their picture taken more fun, you’ll be able to capture more of those special happy moments. They’ll probably last a little longer with the picture taking process too!

3.Remember the Details.

Don’t skip over the little things that make your child’s costume special. It is the little details that can really take their costumes and their Halloween experience to the next level. And sometimes the small details might be what they remember most, you never know. Think about it, the accessories, the masks, their trick or trick bag, their favorite candy. Make sure you get in close to isolate all of the fun elements! Again, the small things can really pull everything together and make the day so special, so don’t forget to snap the smaller details.
